harnessing mutual understanding and respect through listening thoughtfully
Mutual understanding and mutual respect grows out of listening thoughtfully. We need to master the skill of holding our judgment until we fully understand what others are saying. We need not agree with other people’s ideas but we must strive to treat them and their ideas with respect. We need to learn how to listen without condemnation; listen long enough to truly understand their ideas, and how strongly they feel about it before sharing our own perspective on the matter. If all people can master this, imagine how much better this world would be. But we live in an imperfect world where not everything is ideal. Nevertheless, it wouldn’t hurt us much if we try to thoughtfully listen to people whom we interact.
